Riguardo Marcio
I am a capoeira master with over 30 years of experience in teaching all over the world. I first start learning on the streets of my hometown in northern Brazil. After receiving my trainer from one of the traditional Brazilian masters from the north of Brazil I started traveling the world and settled in Canada where I opened the first capoeira school in Toronto and established the first capoeira course at the Univesity of Toronto.

Capoeira, my main artistic practice, is a unique artform which combines improvised body movements, dancing, music and play. Capoeira blends many influences: invented by African slaves in Brazil, it combines elements of African, Indigenous, Arabic and Portugueses cultures.
In my approach to Capoeira, I use ancient ideas from hundreds of years ago, including spirituality in the form of trance, circular movements, and a deep respect for the opponent, to create a sense of flow through human movement. These ideas come from the roots of capoeira where the practitioner achieves an awareness of his or her unconscious self through the body, creating a harmony of body and mind. Consistently practicing Capoeira also results in greater motor coordination, balance, and heightened senses.
I view Capoeira as a state of mind, a lifestyle and a philosophy. It is a way of life which brings the wisdom to deal with life's challenges. It is also a way of seeing the world and its many connections. Through Capoeira, one achieves a pure form of human communication through a game of dance.
These ideas and techniques are adaptable for diverse groups, including people with mental and physical disabilities and other special needs. My artistic mission is to bring Capoeira to those in the fringe of society in order to help them gain confidence and overcome their own physical or emotional limitations.
