Ho insegnato in Italia all'estero per qualche decennio. Ho passato cinque anni al CERN di Ginevra. Ho insegnato meccanica quantistica, Relatività, Analisi Matematica, Fisica I e II. Mi sono molto interessato alle tecniche della didattica. Mi sono specializzato (qualche decennio fa) in università estere. Posso dare lezioni in Italiano, Francese ed Inglese. In rispetto della legge non ho dato che poche lezioni private ai figli degli amici gratis. Però i miei allievi hanno intrapreso la carriera del ricercatore con un buon successo. Naturalmente ho seguito la loro carriera dal punto di vista accademico.

After my dissertation at Modena University, I was involved in research in Fluid Dynamics and Meteorology of both the planetary boundary layer and the global atmosphere. My most relevant contributions regard the transition to chaos in barotropic atmospheres , which were, up to that point, believed not to exhibit any turbulence (see Jupiter for example). Without being a revolutionary results, the mathematical theorem which I and my collaborators have been able to prove, has some relevance in modern planetology.
Later my attention was attracted, after the long visit to C.I.R.E.S of Colorado State University, by the role of internal gravity waves in the terrestrial stratified atmosphere and, in particular, in the boundary layer. In a series of papers we analysed in detail the role of trapped gravity waves in the evolution of the atmospheric region nearest to the earth surface. In particular we have shown that trapped waves at the inversion layer can give rise to turbulent motion, which can in turn contribute to the deepening of the mixed layer near the surface and influence the distribution of pollutants [2,3,4,5]. The results obtained were incorporated into some, more general, boundary layer numerical models at C.I.R.E.S.
I then widened my interests to plasma physics, and in particular to the simplifications induced by electromagnetic forces with respect to normal fluid dynamics shear instabilities and the great interest in Europe, at the time, in hot fusion experiments [6,7]. Most recently, having noticed the characteristics of non-convergence of spectral models of fluids, I reconsidered the problem associated with the hypothesis of a real 3-D geometric space as the substrate of fluids motion. Notwithstanding my mathematical efforts, I was not able until now to solve such a puzzle: some of my very partial results can be found in reference .
In the last years I have been investigating about the comparison of the foundations of the most recent artificial intelligence techniques with the deep mathematical nature of numerical simulations commonly adopted in fluid dynamics simulations..

Numerical modelling of the circulation of sea waters and atmospheric air in Venice
In 1975 at SOGESTA a 16-bit slow PDP-11 computer was available. PDP-11 was a very influential model produced by DEC: in facts the 32-bit Vax series had a PDP-11 compatibility mode. The very Motorola 68000 instruction set has been inspired by the structure of PDP-1. SOGESTA was requested to build up, together with the Tecnomare company located in Venice, two numerical models: one for the fluid dynamics in the complex network of the venetian channels under strong forcing from the sea (high water, i.e. storm surge conditions), and the other for the forecasting of the atmospheric diffusion of pollutants in the Venice area, where the high concentration of oil refineries in Marghera created serious problems to both the population health and the ancient buildings of the central area. The major problems were associated with the simple 16-bits structure of the computer, the general slowness of all the system and the further slowdown of double precision computations. Under my direction both models were however tested and delivered to Tecnomare, which used them to make predictions for the public authorities of the town with a good level of success.
SOGESTA was also one of the first companies in Italy to adopt the high-level language APL on IBM personal stations with an APL interpreter. We produced many software modules for training courses we organised for the mother house, that was ENI.
Neural Networks Application package
Under my presidency, Compa Consortium produced a full package for data analysis and forecasting based on different models of neural networks, including fuzzy logics based networks. The package had also a module for preliminary analysis of data, to eliminate erroneous or improperly registered data before the application of one of the various available models for preliminary data fitting and the subsequent creation of the forecasting neural network. The dimension of the network and its connection structure could also be defined by the user. An appropriate net of fuzzy neural networks, making use of qualitative classification of meteorological parameters and pollution emission by industrial sources, was particularly successful in predicting urban pollution patterns. All the numerical models were transferred to Finsiel, a company of the Italy Telecom Group acting in the environmental and telecommunication field.

Portable Phones Mixed Consortium Project in Moscow
In 1997 I was asked, as President of Consortium COMPA, to verify the possibility of creating a Mixed Consortium of Italian and English companies and Russian Authorities for the Management of portable phones in Moscow and, at the request of Boris Nikolaevič Eltsin, in Yekaterinenburg. The organisation of the Consortium, with the important support of the previous Minister of Environment Yuri Israel, proceeded rapidly until the 1998 crisis of the Government and of Eltsin himself. The whole project was then unfortunately stopped.

Various technical contribution to the conception and design of ships characterised by electrically powered propellers, the electrical energy being generated by distributed arrays of middle power diesel Volvo engines, with a great reduction of environmental pollution, reduction of running costs and the presence of ready reserve diesel engines which could be rapidly moved to substitute possibly broken engines during the navigation, without any stoppage of the ship.
Regione Emilia- Romagna Presidency
Following the President’s recommendations, I reinforced the collaboration with the German Essen Region, a traditional partner of Emilia-Romagna and promoted the collaboration with Skane Region in Sweden. I helped a number of companies from Emilia Romagna to identify partners in Skane, Essen, Finland and France for submitting projects proposals to the European Commission, and lobbied, with the support of the Office of the Region in Brussels, for their financing.
