IN BRIEF
• CEDILS certified — Ca' Foscari University of Venice (2015).
Italian teaching qualifications for Italian as a second or foreign language come in two levels: CEDILS sits at the upper one, and is one of the three the Italian Ministry of Education recognizes as a specialization title (Ministerial Decree 92/2016).
• Taught individuals and groups in Rome for the city's leading expat community, and abroad in Lille, France.
• Full professional knowledge of English and Spanish. The working language is part of my method.
• Ten years of experience in corporate training, working with executives and contributing to learning programs for organizations including Ferrovie dello Stato, Enel, Lamborghini and BNP Paribas.
• Currently working with international professionals in Rome, and giving talks on Italian language and culture for the city's international communities. My last presentation was at the American University of Rome (check out the video section to watch a clip).
HOW I GOT HERE
I am Sicilian. I moved to Rome in 2006, and it took me a while to realize that I had also moved into a slightly different set of social rules. Nobody explained any of it to me. I simply stopped getting it wrong, slowly, over the years.
Later I spent a few months in Venezuela, and then taught in Lille, in France, working in English. For the first time, I was the foreigner in the room.
That is a very useful thing for a teacher to have been.
WHY YOUR ITALIAN FRIENDS CAN'T QUITE EXPLAIN THEIR OWN CULTURE
Most of us have a local friend we can ask: how does this work here? For a government office, a form, a bureaucratic procedure, that friend is the right person.
For social expectations, and for how they run through language, things are different.
Most native speakers follow social conventions without ever becoming consciously aware of them. The right words simply arrive, already fitted to the situation. They never had to build those choices deliberately, or decide in real time which expression would sound warm, respectful, confident or distant.
That is precisely why they usually cannot explain them to you.
WHAT I WENT LOOKING FOR
So I had to learn to step outside my own culture, deliberately, and more than once.
And I went looking for what researchers have documented about how Italians actually make requests, refuse invitations, insist, apologize, give compliments and respond to them.
There is a substantial body of research — and studies of textbooks and teacher preparation show how little of it reaches the classroom.
WHAT I OFFER
That is what I bring: the best research currently available on how Italian interaction works, the cultural reading of specific situations, and the precise language that lets you come across with the same warmth and agency you already have in your own language.

I help you connect through Italian, with Italians.
How?
• Starting from the Italian you already speak.
• Building the reading and the language for the situations that cost you most.
• Training your interaction skills in real time, through a structured cycle.
You already have warmth and standing in your own language. This is about letting them come through in Italian too.
WHAT THIS WORK ADDRESSES ▼
Most people who contact me already speak Italian. Many speak it very well — and still leave certain conversations with the feeling that something did not quite land.
That gap is usually not grammar.
It is what linguists call pragmatics: what your words actually do in a social situation. How a request is softened. How a refusal is expressed, and how it is understood. What "ci sentiamo" means in one context and not in another. Whether you came across as warm, as approachable, or simply as efficient.
This layer is rarely taught explicitly. Textbooks touch on it only briefly, and native speakers use it constantly without being able to explain it.
As a result, you can become fluent and still be misunderstood. And once your Italian sounds correct, people stop attributing misunderstandings to "still learning the language" and start attributing them to your personality.
HOW THE SESSIONS WORK
These are not standard Italian lessons.
We work through a structured cycle of sessions. The design reflects a well-documented finding in this field: this layer of language responds to explicit instruction, and considerably less to exposure alone.
You may bring either a real situation from your week, or an important interaction you know is coming.
If we work on a real situation, our sessions typically follow this sequence:
1. We unpack the situation.
2. We identify what was actually happening beneath the surface, through a situated cultural reading.
3. We build the exact Italian for that context, starting from the words you already have. The principle is always the same: the greatest gain in connection for the least new effort.
4. We rehearse through role-play, until those choices are available to you in real time.
5. You try them in real life.
6. We debrief, and the next cycle begins.
Typical situations: a message that received an unexpected reply, an invitation that quietly disappeared, a meeting that suddenly felt colder than expected, or the sense that your friendliness simply did not come across.
We examine what was happening, what social expectations were in play, what your choices communicated, and what different choices would have communicated instead. Then we build the Italian itself: the exact phrases, together with the reasons they work.
If you are preparing for a conversation that is coming — a networking event, an important meeting, a difficult discussion — we adapt the same structure to realistic scenarios, so that you can rehearse before it happens.
Whenever published research on Italian interaction is available, I use it. When it is not, I tell you clearly that I am drawing on trained native-speaker competence made explicit through analysis. You always know which is which.
Over time you need the analysis less and less. The cultural reading becomes your own, and it keeps working long after our sessions have ended.
PRACTICAL INFORMATION
Sessions are available in person in Rome, or online.
English or Spanish: for analyzing situations and discussing cultural nuance with maximum precision.
Italian: for role-play, and for rehearsing the exact language you will use under pressure.
Professional invoicing is available. I work as an independent professional with my own Partita IVA, and this is my full-time occupation.
WHO THIS IS NOT FOR
I do not teach beginner Italian, and I do not prepare students for grammar-based exams. If what you are looking for is general conversation practice by the hour, there are many excellent teachers on this platform, and I would rather not take on a student whose needs are better served by a different approach.
WHO THIS IS FOR
If you already live in Italy, already speak Italian, and still feel that something in your professional or social life is not opening the way it should, this is exactly what I work on.
If you are preparing to move to Italy, we can begin before you arrive. In that case we focus on the sociocultural dimension of Italian interaction. That awareness can be built in English from the very beginning — long before your Italian is ready to carry it — and it will also improve your conversations in English with Italians, because sociocultural expectations do not disappear when people switch languages.
FIRST CONVERSATION
Our first conversation is free. It is not a trial lesson: it is a conversation and a diagnostic.
You describe a real situation you experienced recently, or one you would like to prepare for, and I show you what I notice from a pragmatic and sociocultural point of view.
If we decide we are a good fit, you leave with a preliminary plan for the work ahead.
Raccomandazioni
Le raccomandazioni provengono dagli amici, familiari e colleghi dell'insegnante
I’m American, a former senior project manager, and I now teach English professionally in Rome. After three years here, with a solid B2 level of Italian, I kept running into the same problem. People would show genuine interest in my English lessons, we'd exchange a few messages on WhatsApp, and then the conversation would lose momentum. They were always polite, but it usually ended with something like, "Thanks, I'll let you know."
I assumed the problem was my Italian, so I focused on getting the grammar right. Giovanni showed me that grammar wasn't really the issue.
He went through my actual WhatsApp conversations with me and explained how my messages came across. The timing, tone, and amount of information weren't what Italians generally expect at the beginning of a professional relationship. It wasn't about making fewer mistakes—it was about creating the right first impression.
That was something I wouldn't have figured out from a language course. Giovanni's corporate background also made his advice especially useful for someone building a business in Italy. After putting his suggestions into practice, I found two new clients within a short time.Visualizza tutte le raccomandazioni
