Riguardo Nicola
I decided to teach Italian as a foreign language when I was 23. Since then, my entire education path and professional career has evolved around this field.
I graduated from the University for Foreigners of Siena, Tuscany, with a Master's in Linguistics, specializing in Italian Language Pedagogy for Foreigners, and as a qualified Italian teacher with DITALS Grade II certification.
I started teaching at the University for Foreigners of Siena, then moved to Argentina to teach at the Italian Institute of Culture, Buenos Aires After two years, I moved to Barcelona, Spain, to work as Educational Coordinator of a private Italian Language and Culture School. I currently live and work in Tuscany, Italy, teaching Italian as a foreign language in a state school for adult education.
Besides mere teaching, I gained professional experience in authoring, copywriting and training: while I was in Barcelona, I started collaborating as editor and author (see Traguardo CILS B2 and Al Dente!) with a publisher called Casa delle Lingue; I have also trained teachers in Argentina, Spain and Italy.

I have taught people in groups and one-on-one from countries from all over Europe, South America, North America, Asia and Africa, at any starting level (from pre-A1 to C2). Their ages have ranged from 12 to 80, and educational experience has ranged from illiterate to higher education qualifications. Their life experience has ranged too - from job seeking immigrants, recent refugees through to high level professionals.
Every teaching-learning path starts from the learner’s needs. Once motivations and specific needs have been analyzed, I’ll plan and focus on priorities for which areas, texts, abilities and skills will be developed in the lessons.
Methods vary depending on what results learners need to achieve. For instance: an inductive perspective of learning grammar and textual abilities, if the focus is on written skills; project-work method if the learner needs to carry out tasks in every-day life environment; specific cognitive training if the short-term goal is to earn a linguistic certification (CILS, CELI or PLIDA).
Very often a combination of different methods will be used. In all lessons the student is at the center of that learning path, the teacher is the guide.
So, depending on your learning needs, these are the kind of classes I'm available for:
- communication focused on the four main abilities;
- conversation, to improve your fluency, vocabulary and pronunciation;
- specific training for official certification exams (CILS, CELI, PLIDA).
